Portents

Cycle 1 / Dovetail Joints, 2020
Notebook 2 / Invert/Extant, 2022

Portents develops sequences of drawings and texts through chance operations. Images are grouped into compositions that form abstract visual narratives, with colour and order shaping how each sequence is read.

Portents: Cycle 1 was presented through Dovetail Joints in 2020. The 2022 publication Notebook 2: Portents gathered 74 initial drawings and their accompanying texts, providing material for compositional scores and video pieces that explore sequence and duration.

The Story of Home: a mobile wooden audio structure placed in a paved yard beside a fence and brick building
The Story of Home / Mobile audio installation, Jared Pappas-Kelley. Image from the artist’s former portfolio.

An audio work developed from Pappas-Kelley’s interviews with residents and historians about Home, a utopian community in rural Washington around the turn of the twentieth century. Housed in a mobile wooden structure, the work was placed in public spaces unannounced.

Developed for M-Space in Tacoma, the project combined audio, sculpture, and new media.

Some Say She Lost Her Head / Film still from the artist’s former portfolio.

Some Say She Lost Her Head was shown at Tacoma Art Museum in The Surrealist Impulse: New Acquisitions from the Tacoma Art Museum Collection (2008–09), an exhibition exploring surrealism and new additions to the museum’s collection. Writing in 2008, critic Alec Clayton noted the video’s black-and-white imagery and macabre humour.

Pappas-Kelley and Corey Lund were both credited in contemporary coverage of the earlier Tollbooth presentation, which used the shortened title She Lost Her Head.

For the Tollbooth presentation, the video and soundtrack were paired with a paper element that invited passers-by to fill in the missing head with chalk.
